What is HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 is a United States Law that
was passed to safeguard data from getting into the wrong hands. HIPAA was enacted on
August 21, 1996 and applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses and any health
care provider who transmits health information in electronic form.
